Vermiculite attic insulation appears as small, brown to gold, very light pebbles, which are poured onto floors of attic spaces between the joists. One very common brand was called Zonolite, which is associated with a mine near Libby, Montana. The mine is source of over seventy percent of all vermiculite sold in the U.S. Deposits of asbestos were also found at that mine, so Zonolite is contaminated with asbestos. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, if you have vermiculite attic insulation, you should assume the material is contaminated with asbestos.
Vermiculite was primarily used in the construction industry but also was used in other markets as well. Besides attic insulation, other products containing vermiculite include potting soil mixes and packing material.
The EPA states that if your home contains vermiculite attic insulation, you should assume that it contains asbestos, and you should not move or disturb it in any way.
According to the EPA’s website, if you have vermiculite in your attic:
The Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust is funded by W.R. Grace. Under the fund, eligible Claimants can be reimbursed for their ZAI Property Damage Claims (“ZAI PD”). The Zonolite Attic Insulation Trust will fund an Independent Trust and Claims Facility (“the Trust”) that will operate for a minimum of 20 years. The trust will pay claims and educate the public about the potential health effects associated with asbestos containing vermiculite. Ask a Bluestone representative about how we can help you with your claim to get 50% of the vermiculite removal cost refunded directly to you.
